An Echo dot is a smart speaker that functions as a smart home hub when it connects to Wi-Fi. Alexa works as a virtual assistant for the Echo dot. Simply put, the Echo dot is the hardware that uses Alexa as its software.

Echo Dot Setup Mode:

  • The Smart Speaker Echo device automatically enters the setup mode when it powers on. 
  • Set-up mode allows you to connect to the Alexa App on your phone via Bluetooth.
  • Next, connect your Dot to the Wi-Fi network. Echo Dot device will not work without a Wi-Fi connection.
  • When the Echo Dot enters the Setup mode, the ring of light turns from blue to orange. You can start using Alexa voice commands and Alexa skills after you have set up your Echo Dot.

Requirements:

  • An Echo device, echo dot, echo plus, and other devices you want to set up.
  • Internet connection through the Wi-Fi router.
  • A smartphone or a computer.

How to Set up Echo Dot Device using Alexa App?

Follow the steps to Set up Echo Dot: 

 

  • First, download and open the Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet. Or you can download it from the Official website as well.
  • After opening the app, follow the steps on the Alexa app:
  • Select Devices in the right corner of the app. Press the + (Plus) icon in the top right corner.
  • Tap Add Device.
  • From the ‘All Devices’ Section, choose Amazon Echo. 
  • Then tap on Echo Setup as Echo Dot, Echo Plus, and more icons one by one.

Note: You can choose to set up only one device at a time. For setting up multiple Echo devices, repeat the process for every device.


  • After selecting the devices, choose your location and language.
  • An orange light will turn on and a window appears asking if the Echo device is being plugged in. 
  • Plug in the Echo Dot by using a power adapter. Once the Echo device is getting power, check for the light ring on the device's top. The light ring will turn blue.
  • Wait until the blue light ring turns orange. This orange light tells that your device is in Setup Mode. 
  • Tap Yes in the window to confirm.
  • Select the Network in the Wi-Fi settings.

For this, go to mobile Wi-Fi network settings.

 
Turn on Wi-Fi and check the show list of “Available Networks”. The network name with the format “Amazon-XXX” will be visible to you. Select it.
 
If you don’t find any such network name then, refresh the list and wait for the network name to display on the screen.
  • Now, you will need to go back to Alexa App and click on ‘Next’
  • Then click on the ‘Continue’ button.
  • After that, wait until the procedure for Alexa Set up finishes.
 
Note: For any problem related to the Wi-Fi connection, check the Internet connection and router device. 
When you see an option that asks to configure the settings later, select Skip.
 
If the device doesn't enter setup mode automatically, reset your Echo device to restore it to factory settings.
Most of the time, the Echo device automatically connects to the Alexa app. But if it is not the case, then you need to complete the process manually.

Try Talking to Alexa:

The wake word for the Echo Speaker is Alexa by default. However, you may change it. You can use ‘Ziggy’, ‘Amazon’, ‘Computer’, and ‘Echo’ as the wake-up words.
 
The smart device responds to all commands given by you. Check Alexa’s response by asking her some questions: 

“Alexa, tell me history fact?”
“Alexa, what time is it?”
“Alexa, Tell me a joke?”
